CAREERS & VOLUNTEERING | School of Cardiovascular Diagnostics << Back Claude Smith, M.D. Claude Smith, M.D., is the vascular medical director for both the School of Cardiovascular Diagnostics and the Cardiovascular Imaging Lab at Providence Heart Institute. He is a board-certified cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon. He received his doctor of medicine degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1967. His residency includes general surgery and chief residency at University Hospital (Birmingham, Alabama, 1968 to 1972), and residency and chief resident of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill, 1974 to 1976). He served in the US Air Force, rising to the rank of Major, from 1972 to 1974. Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology; and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He served as the Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Providence, in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
