CAREERS & VOLUNTEERING | Volunteering at Providence
Steps to Becoming a Providence Volunteer
1. Contact the Volunteer Services Office at (803) 256-5318. Notify us of your interest and obtain an application or click here to notify us online. If you would like to download an application form, click here.
2. Complete the application. Return the completed application, including permission for a security check, to:
Volunteer Services
Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals
2435 Forest Drive
Columbia, SC 29204
3. When contacted by our office, you will be asked to attend an interview with the Director of Volunteer Services, Ruth Nichols. At this time, you will also be asked to complete a medical history and to obtain a signature from your physician on a form certifying you are in sufficiently good health to volunteer. Your work assignment will also be discussed.
4. Obtain a PPD (tuberculin skin test): This is available through the hospital’s Employee Health office and can usually be done on the same day as your interview, if that is convenient for you. This test is a DHEC requirement for everyone who works in a health care facility.
Once you are accepted, you will:
1. Attend a hospital-wide orientation: for new volunteers and employees. The Volunteer Services office will schedule a specific orientation session after your interview. These sessions are conducted by the Human Resources Department in the Community Education Building at 2701 Laurel Street (the building with the green awning). Sessions are held every other Monday, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please call (803) 256-5410 to reschedule if the time you were assigned becomes inconvenient for you. Human Resources will provide you with a picture ID badge.
2. Attend any special orientation or training that is required for your particular work assignment. All Pastoral Care volunteers and those in the Mended Hearts program will schedule special training with Pastoral Care and Cardiac Rehabilitation, respectively.
3. Begin work: Suggested work shifts are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Special arrangements can be made to accommodate a volunteer’s prior commitments.
