Pacemaker and ICD programming and analysis
After a pacemaker or ICD device is implanted, the device will be programmed and analyzed so peak function is achieved. During the process, the patient sits in a reclining chair and the pacemaker is connected to a computer monitor. A pacemaker programmer is used to check pacemaker. The programmer uses a wand placed directly over the pacemaker or ICD, which allows the technician to read the pacemaker settings and make changes during testing. As changes are made, the function of the pacemaker and leads are analyzed. It is normal to feel the herat beating slower or faster during the process. Results of the pacemaker check are discussed with the physician, who will then determine the pacemaker settings. After programming, an echocardiogram will be done, during which the technician will change the pacemaker three times. The echocardiogram will be repeated with each change to evaluate heart function, and the pacemaker will be set to the best level to ensure good heart function.
